Ashwagandha has the following properties:

  • Lagohu (easy)
  • Snigdha (improves the moisture content of tissues)
  • Tikta Rasa (bitter taste)
  • Madhura rasa (sweet taste)

According to Ayurveda, Ashwagandha balances elevated Vata and Kapha doshas.

(Ashwa = horse, gandha = smell). Ashwagandha got its name because its roots have a horse-like smell.

According to the ancient Ayurvedic text of the Charak Samhita, ashwagandha affects balya (physical strength) and brimhaniya (body mass).

According to Ayurveda, ashwagandha balances elevated Vata and Kapha doshas and is known in Ayurveda as an excellent nerve tonic and adaptogen, which is also said to support mental and emotional well-being.*
