Move with joy – Ayurveda for bones and joints

YouTube Webinar: Moving with Joy – Ayurvedic Wisdom for Bones & Joints

Bones & Joints from an Ayurvedic Perspective

In Ayurveda, we distinguish between seven body tissues, called Dhatus. One of these is bone tissue, Asthi Dhatu, which gives our body structure, firmness, and strength. A well-balanced digestive fire (Agni) is a prerequisite for stable and resilient bones. It ensures that calcium and phosphorus, which are so important for our bones, are absorbed and utilized.

Unfortunately, this is not always successful. Additionally, due to hormonal changes that women and men experience from the age of 50, the absorption of calcium and phosphorus can be impaired, meaning a good supply is not always guaranteed. We can counteract this with a diet tailored to our Dosha type, a good daily routine, and sufficient exercise. We reveal more about this in the webinar recording “Moving with Joy – Ayurveda for Bones & Joints”.

Nutrition

Ayurveda explains that our food is processed by "Agni" (digestive fire). If the digestive fire is weakened or disturbed, the digestion process will not be complete, and according to Ayurveda, waste products (Ama) will form. Nutrients cannot then contribute to tissue building, and Ama can accumulate in the joints, putting long-term strain on them. It is therefore all the more important to choose fresh, whole, preferably organic, and predominantly plant-based foods, and to always adapt our diet to our Agni. This is particularly important for Kapha types with a less vigorous digestive fire, but also for Vata types with fluctuating Agni. They should not consume too much cheese, milk, and yogurt. Restraint is also advisable with cold and sour foods.

Internal Cleansing

To minimize Ama formation, promote Ama elimination, and relieve the digestive system, you can also:
  • occasionally have a liquid day (warm drinks and soups, e.g., a rice soup with mung dal, juices)
  • intermittently fast by eating dinner early and not having your next meal until breakfast, and – if you feel comfortable with it – occasionally waiting until around 12:00 PM the next day for lunch.
  • perform a targeted cleansing cure (Panchakarma)
Panchakarma is particularly recommended for all individuals prone to arthritis, osteoarthritis, and rheumatism. Try it out as soon as the opportunity arises.

External Care

An important part of the Ayurvedic daily routine is self-massage with oil. Abhyanga cleanses, nourishes, and cares all at once. Pay special attention to your joints when massaging them with a high-quality oil tailored to your Dosha type during your daily oil massage. In addition, you can rub your joints with the refreshing Maharishi Ayurveda Balm or "Ayur Flex" massage oil.

Gentle Movement – Yoga & More

Type-appropriate, regular exercise strengthens our musculoskeletal system, improves digestion, and relaxes. Targeted stretching keeps muscles and fascia supple and elastic. Through movement, we feel our own body, discover and expand its potential. Yoga is ideal for bringing the body into harmony with nature. Tip: Start the day with a morning Sun Salutation. With this simple exercise, you reach your entire body – from head to toes. "Suryanamaskar" releases tension and provides energy; the body gains elasticity, strength, and power; in addition, this yogic exercise series has a positive effect on your emotions and your weight. Start with one or two rounds and slowly increase as desired and possible. Enjoy the wonderfully relaxed feeling after the practice, and then rest for a few minutes lying on your back. You can find more Yoga tips on our website. Have fun trying it out! Your Maharishi Ayurveda Team
