How do you start a successful and healthy day? When is the best time to wake up according to Ayurveda? We would like to tell you all this and much more in this article.
For thousands of years, Ayurveda has taught that the different cycles of nature (e.g. day/night, seasons and phases of life) influence our body and mind and also how we can use these rhythms. Classical Ayurvedic literature describes detailed procedures for supporting health and youthfulness in the form of a daily routine, called "Dinacharya".
Here we present the best Ayurvedic tips for the morning.
You may wonder how you can integrate so many things into your modern everyday life, where you may have to prepare breakfast for the children and do so much before you go to work yourself.
Just start with the tips that you can easily implement and build them up slowly. Enjoy new well-being and a healthy balance!
The ideal time to wake up
Ayurveda recommends, ideally, waking up before 6:00 a.m., during the morning Vata phase, and going to bed during the evening Kapha period (by 10:00 p.m.).
Ayurvedic Morning Routine: Fresh and relaxed into the day
After getting up, brush your teeth and clean your tongue. This removes toxins and bacteria that have built up overnight and prevents them from returning to the body.
To activate your digestion, you can drink a glass of room-temperature water and then empty your bladder and bowels.
Now get your circulation going! Light physical exercises, such as a brisk walk or the "Sun Salutation" (Surya Namaskar) are ideal pick-me-ups.
Afterwards, it's back to the bathroom: an Ayurvedic oil massage (Abhyanga) and "oil pulling" (Gandusha) await you. You can oil yourself first and perform "Gandusha" while the oil is working.
Abhyanga
An Ayurvedic self-massage is gentle, yet profound and easy to perform. You feel "protected" and completely comfortable in your own skin all day long.
Try it out! You can find instructions here.
Kapha types are also recommended a "Garshan" massage (dry massage with raw silk gloves) as a substitute (optionally before Abhyanga).
Gandusha
For "oil pulling" (Gandusha), use ripened sesame oil (1 - 2 tablespoons). Swish the oil back and forth in your mouth and gargle lightly until it becomes slightly foamy. Then spit it into a container (not down the drain!). Ayurvedic texts praise "Gandusha" as an effective means of strengthening the voice, jaw, taste perception and protecting against tooth decay!
Bath or shower, shaving and nail care complete the morning hygiene.
If you practice yoga and meditation, now enjoy this quiet appointment with yourself.
The dress code in Ayurvedic texts: "Clean and comfortable clothing that suits the season and activities"
Optionally a light breakfast - and off to a power day!
By the way: What looks very extensive and long here, with a little practice becomes an enrichment for every day.
