What fasting type are you?

For many people, spring is also a time of fasting, which often begins on Ash Wednesday, about six weeks before Easter. This tradition aligns with the knowledge of Ayurveda, according to which the humid and cold period from about the end of February is very suitable for fasting. This is because with the increasing power of the sun, the body's self-cleansing forces are activated. The elimination of metabolic waste products that have accumulated during the winter and the reduction of fat tissue can now be effectively supported with a suitable diet. In this Ayurvedic sense, fasting does not mean simple starvation, but rather a quantitatively reduced, light to very light, but type-appropriate diet.

Type-appropriate fasting means dosha-appropriate fasting

Are you already familiar with the principle of the three doshas Vata, Pitta, and Kapha? Then you can safely skip this paragraph. Otherwise, it makes sense to review the various characteristics of the Dosha types. This is because every Ayurvedic measure should be tailored to your individual constitution.

According to Ayurveda, your physiology is permeated by three holistic and universal fundamental forces, the doshas Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. They control all physical, mental, and emotional processes. Your personal characteristics, physical traits, and talents suggest a predominance of one or two doshas. This individual and fundamental balance determines your dosha type.

Almost everyone is a "mixed type"

If you had a significantly higher proportion of one dosha than the other two, for example, a lot of Vata but little Pitta and Kapha, you would be a Vata type. If, for example, you had about equal amounts of Pitta and Kapha, but little Vata, you would be a Pitta-Kapha type. Everyone has their completely individual proportions of the three doshas, which are characterized by the following qualities.

The Vata-dominated type has a light bone structure and low weight. They gain weight with difficulty and have an irregular appetite. Vata people get cold easily, feel good in heat, and like to eat and drink hot things. They are flexible, enthusiastic, imaginative, and communicative. If a Vata type gets out of balance, nervousness, anxiety, worries, and sleep disorders are often the result. Dry skin, constipation, and cold hands and feet are also signs of a disturbed Vata dosha.

People with a Pitta dominance have a medium build. They eat a lot and usually tolerate any food. If they have to postpone a meal, they are easily irritated. Pitta people are good speakers, can structure well, are organized and inventive, as well as ambitious and decisive. In case of a Pitta disorder, they tend to perfectionism, outbursts of anger, irritability, skin rashes, and inflammation.

The Kapha type has a strong build, pronounced muscles, and a tendency to overweight. Their immune system works well, and they rarely get sick. Kapha people are persistent; physical work and exercise do them good. Patience, mental strength, and gentleness characterize them.

If Kapha gets out of balance, the person tends to overweight, dullness or depression, as well as nausea, a feeling of fullness, and a runny nose.

Dosha-appropriate Fasting

Fasting is intended to remove metabolic residues, toxins, and fats from the organism. It is therefore obvious that this always entails a loss of body matter. Dr. med. Mathias Kossatz, an Ayurvedic doctor in Frankfurt, therefore says: "People with a Kapha dominance generally tolerate fasting well because they have matter to spare. In contrast, in Ayurveda, fasting would not be recommended for the Vata type and the pronounced Vata-Pitta type, at least as long as they are not overweight. They naturally cannot afford to give up matter. They would lose weight very quickly and would then have great difficulty regaining their meager weight."

Ideally, therefore, one should fast only under the supervision of an experienced Ayurveda therapist or seek advice from an Ayurveda doctor or in an Ayurveda clinic before fasting. The German Society for Ayurveda will gladly provide you with addresses. Although zero fasting is not recommended in Ayurveda because it would put too much strain on the power of Agni (digestive fire), the possibilities of medical recommendations for your individual fasting plan are diverse and extensive. While for one person a light, vegetarian lunch and hot ginger tea for several weeks may be sufficient, another may need three meals a day, composed in such a way that they ideally support their detoxification. For sensitive types, even one soup day a week can be the right measure.

Don't let stress arise

However, one Ayurvedic insight, which can be observed during fasting and even in every other life situation, applies to all Dosha types: "Our inner nature is driven by happiness," says Dr. med. Mathias Kossatz. "If we do something right, then we should feel better or even happier as a result. Especially during fasting, during detoxification, it can happen again and again that this is temporarily not the case. However, if you fast for a longer period, you should constantly feel better or at least good. If this is not the case, it is time to consult an experienced Ayurvedic doctor – or to stop fasting."

A word about weight reduction

According to Ayurvedic understanding, weight problems are not just a question of excessive food intake. Especially massive overweight is mainly a question of metabolism. For long-lasting success, this must be restored to its usual, normal function. Short-term successes through a reduction in food intake usually cannot solve the problem, because metabolism is further weakened by fasting. Therefore, fasting individuals almost always regain weight after an initially successful cure, often even beyond the original starting weight (yo-yo effect).

Maharishi Ayurveda doctors will therefore recommend various methods that all together have a positive effect on the entire metabolism and, in combination, are intended to ensure that the successes in balancing metabolism and losing weight can be maintained. To support the personal dosha constitution, suitable Maharishi Ayurveda food supplements are also available. Maharishi Ayurveda clinics or health centers also offer special and individually adapted cure treatments from the program of classic Panchakarma therapy.
