Probiotic Lassi – Ayurvedic Fitness Drink for the Gut
In Ayurveda, the gut is regarded as a crucial pillar of our health. This is a finding that is increasingly supported by scientific studies and is slowly gaining recognition in conventional medicine too.
We can support our gut with probiotic foods, which contain a wealth of beneficial bacteria and help to maintain or restore a healthy gut flora.
This article reveals to you,
- why the gut is so important for our health,
- what makes Lassi so valuable as an Ayurvedic probiotic,
- how you can easily make Lassi yourself and
- what needs to be taken into consideration.
The Gut as the Root of Our Body
Ayurvedic experts such as Dr Saurabh Sharma often compare the gut to the roots of a tree: “For a strong tree, it is important to supply the roots with fertiliser and nutrients.”
The same applies to us: when the gut is healthy and our digestion is functioning properly, we can make good use of our food and absorb nutrients from the gut that nourish and strengthen our entire body.
Dr Sharma explains: “The health of the gut and stomach is like the engine of the body, and when the engine works well, the whole system works well.”
As important as a good, wholesome diet is – if digestion is not functioning properly, even the best foods cannot be fully utilised.
How well our food is utilised depends largely on our digestive power (Agni). The stronger our Agni (see notes), the better we can utilise our food and the fewer waste products are produced during metabolism. Good digestion produces Ojas, the last and finest of the seven Dhatus (tissues), which is closely connected with our life energy and makes us radiate from within.
“Ayurveda regards our gut as the root of our body.”

Strengthening Digestive Power (Agni)
From an Ayurvedic perspective, we can strengthen our digestive fire (Agni) by
- eating according to our Dosha type,
- adapting our diet to the season,
- eating at the right time and in peace,
- following the Ayurvedic daily routine and only eating again once the previous meal has been completely digested, meaning when we genuinely feel hungry
- providing our body with wholesome, fresh, probiotic and alkaline foods
- using digestion-promoting and metabolism-supporting spices and food supplements
- avoiding stress and sensory overload, maintaining a positive outlook and ensuring a good work-life balance

Probiotics – the Living Boost for the Gut
With probiotic foods, we introduce viable microorganisms into our gut that support the bacterial balance. In this way, we automatically strengthen the gut microbiome, which is so important for our health and digestion and whose significance and care we have already discussed in an earlier blog article with Dr Keith Wallace (USA).
Lassi – a proven Ayurvedic home remedy for gentle gut care
Ayurveda knows probiotics in the form of so-called “Asavas” and “Arishtas”. However, the simplest and one of the best Ayurvedic probiotics is Lassi, also known as Takra. It is considered to cleanse the gut and support digestion. This extremely popular and widespread drink in India contains – when prepared according to Ayurvedic principles – valuable microorganisms that gently support our digestion and strengthen our digestive power. At the same time, it is very easy to prepare at home and is suitable for all Dosha types. It is therefore worth drinking Lassi regularly.
Lassi is particularly recommended for people who frequently suffer from bloating or constipation or experience an unpleasant feeling of fullness after eating. People with little appetite and weak digestive fire should also definitely try Lassi.

Completely Different: Lassi & Yoghurt
Although Lassi is made from yoghurt, it has completely different, even opposite properties (Gunas). From an Ayurvedic perspective, yoghurt is considered mildly heating (Usna virya), difficult to digest and “Sroto abhishanti”, meaning that it blocks our body's subtle channels (Srotas), which transport oxygen, bodily fluids, blood, plasma and so on. For some people, this can lead to tiredness and fatigue.
Lassi, on the other hand, has a cooling effect. It opens the body's subtle channels and strengthens our digestive power. Anyone who drinks Lassi regularly will feel this for themselves: we sleep better, feel energised and more enthusiastic.
The secret behind this transformation lies in the preparation process. In Ayurveda, it is said: “Sanskaro hi gunantardhanam”. This means that the qualities of foods change through defined processing methods. And this is exactly what happens when we prepare Lassi from yoghurt according to traditional Ayurvedic principles.
| Yoghurt | Lassi |
| mildly heating | cooling |
| rather difficult to digest | supports digestion |
| blocks our body's subtle channels (Srotas) | opens the body's subtle channels (Srotas) |
| can lead to tiredness and fatigue | gives us freshness and energy |
Traditional Basic Recipe for Probiotic Lassi
To make fresh Ayurvedic Lassi, we use
- 1 part fresh yoghurt
- 4 parts lukewarm water
Mix both thoroughly with a blender or whisk until nicely frothy.
Now remove the top layer of foam and strain the remainder. A clean cotton cloth is ideal for this, but you can also use a fine sieve. Then add spices such as Vata Churna.
Your probiotic Lassi is ready!
The foam contains fat, so we remove it to make the Lassi lighter and therefore easier to digest.
For the same reason, we also strain the Lassi. This also gives it the consistency described in authentic recipes.
10 Tips for Your Perfect Lassi
We have put together 10 tips to help you get the greatest possible benefit from your Lassi.
- Choosing the yoghurt
The best base for your Ayurvedic Lassi is a probiotic organic natural yoghurt. - The fresher the yoghurt, the better
As yoghurt changes its properties over time, it should be as fresh as possible. Anyone who makes their own yoghurt using a yoghurt maker and probiotic cultures has an especially easy time of it. It does not get any fresher! After preparation, the yoghurt can be stored for 1-2 days and used for Lassi. - The ideal ratio
In the literature – and also on our website – you will find recipes with different ratios of yoghurt to water. According to “Bhavprakash Nighantu”, a ratio of 1:4 is optimal, as it dilutes the Lassi and makes it very easy to digest without impairing Agni.

- The ideal temperature
Always use lukewarm water to make your Lassi! – Please also note that, according to Ayurveda, yoghurt should not be used for cooking meals. - The right time
It is best to drink Lassi regularly – ideally every day – during the daytime. Not in the evening. - Prepare it fresh
To get the greatest benefit, you should prepare your Lassi immediately before drinking it whenever possible. If this is not practical, for example because you are travelling, it is best to drink the Lassi within 2-3 hours of preparation. - Vata Churna – an authentic addition
With ½ teaspoon of Organic Vata Churna per glass of Lassi, you can make your probiotic drink even more beneficial. - Individual seasoning
Of course, you can also vary the herbs and spices in your Lassi according to your preferences. Depending on your Dosha type, Agni and taste, you could add, for example, a small amount of grated ginger, ground cumin, cardamom, a little Himalayan salt or Ayurvedic rock salt. - Better without: vegan milk alternatives
There are now also delicious vegan Lassi recipes.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, Lassis based on almond, rice or soya milk have different qualities and do not offer the same benefits as Lassi made from yoghurt. However, they also support digestion and are a healthy alternative. - Lassi and food supplements
Lassi is also recommended for taking certain food supplements, such as Digest Spezial.
Have fun trying it out, and wishing you all the best for your (gut) health
