Ayurveda types – Vata, Pitta, Kapha

Ayurveda defines "dosha" as fundamental regulatory forces that operate in nature and are also present within us. Our Ayurvedic type (dosha type, constitutional type, "prakriti") is determined from birth and shapes not only our physical structure, mental abilities, our skills, and preferences, but also how we react to certain foods, seasons, weather conditions, and the challenges of everyday life.

The doshas can be identified and determined by their characteristics. Depending on which dosha predominates, Ayurveda distinguishes between Vata, Pitta, Kapha, and mixed doshas.

What you should know about Vata, Pitta, Kapha

Vata, Pitta and Kapha: This is what Ayurvedic health science calls the three “doshas” (regulating forces), and it places great importance on their harmony and balance.

But what exactly are doshas? Ayurveda describes the doshas as three fundamental forces or principles that permeate the entire cosmos, nature, and humans, and thus control all bodily functions.

The individual distribution of the three doshas determines our constitution, or our Ayurvedic type. It describes our mental and physical predispositions: our physique, our nutritional needs, and our metabolism, as well as the different traits of our personality, our temperament, our likes and dislikes, our strengths and weaknesses.
