In this article, you will learn which doshas characterize childhood, youth, and old age, how your dosha type reacts to hormonal changes, which life stage is particularly significant for your health, and how you can optimally support your body in all life stages.

Women – Origin of Life

Whether in India, here in Europe, or worldwide: women represent giving, love, strength, and the origin of life. We all came into this world through a woman. Throughout life, the female organism is subjected to much greater demands by numerous hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause than men, whose life stages tend to be more consistent. It is therefore particularly important for women to pay close attention to their health and to support their bodies according to their respective life stages. You can find tips and suggestions on how Ayurveda can support you throughout your life in this article.

A Life in Flux

Ayurveda for Women - Life Stage

Childhood & Youth

In childhood, dominated by the Kapha principle, a time of building and growth, our body needs particularly much nourishment, energy, protein, and vitamins. For girls, with the first menstruation, the need for nutrients further increases, especially iron. Therefore, even more support is needed. Good nutrition improves nutrient absorption, prevents anemia, and supports the formation of Dhatus (body tissues). Especially recommended for young women are iron-rich foods such as green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, eggplants, broccoli, and zucchini. We also recommend the Ayurvedic Iron Rasayana from Maharishi Ayurveda®.

The Adult Woman

Adulthood falls within the Pitta phase of life. During this phase, women experience many hormonal changes. Especially during this period of life, you should not only take care of others but also take good care of yourself and pay attention to your own harmonious balance.

Midlife Hormonal imbalances during this life stage can lead to various menstrual problems such as amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), cryptomenorrhea (menstrual symptoms without blood flow), rare, irregular or prolonged menstrual periods, or lack of fertility. Other women, however, experience very heavy and/or painful periods or vaginal discharge (leukorrhea). Ayurveda recommends in all these cases a balanced diet and also paying attention to digestion, a healthy, balanced lifestyle and proper hygiene. Particularly valuable for women are avocados, zucchini, broccoli, plenty of green leafy vegetables, tomatoes and beetroot. However, when choosing foods, please always consider your individual Dosha constitution.

Furthermore, the Women's Rasayana with its unique combination of Ayurvedic herbs is a supportive dietary supplement recommended for all adult women (except during pregnancy). Regular (Yoga) asanas, meditation, and a balanced lifestyle can also help to go through the Pitta life phase lightly and carefree.

Dietary Tips: The Best for Vata, Pitta, and Kapha Women

Vata Type

Women with a pronounced Vata Dosha and correspondingly fluctuating Agni (digestive fire, see note) are more prone to constipation and bloating. As a Vata type, you should eat light meals at slightly smaller intervals and avoid dry foods, salads, and beans. Regular use of spices and spice mixtures is recommended, as they improve digestion and give you a better appetite, better satiety, and better taste.

Pitta Type

Women with a Pitta-dominated constitution (Prakriti) tend to have heavier menstruations. Avoid spicy foods, red meat, and citrus fruits, as these stimulate the fire element. You should also use paprika and salt sparingly. Light and easily digestible foods are ideal. Cook yourself as much as possible, instead of ordering food or buying it ready-made. The Ayurvedic Iron Rasayana as an iron donor can provide valuable services.

Kapha Type

Typical for women with a pronounced Kapha Dosha are weak or irregular periods, which can indicate that the subtle body channels are not clear. Here, it is important to pay attention to good cleansing and elimination early on. As a Kapha type, you should not eat leftover food and avoid foods that increase the Kapha proportion in the body, such as cucumbers or melons. Restraint is also advised with milk and cheese. Instead of milk, you can try some rice or almond milk. The following table shows the most important tips for each type at a glance.

Vata Type Pitta Type Kapha Type
Recommended eat smaller meals more frequently; Ghee, salty, sour, sweet taste, digestive spices, especially sweet and warming spices like anise, fennel, cumin, fresh ginger, mustard seeds, fenugreek, cinnamon, cardamom, licorice, asafoetida, turmeric, cloves, black pepper (in small quantities), basil and rock salt easily digestible foods, rather bitter, astringent and sweet foods, salads and vegetables, ghee, sweet and ripe fruit Support elimination as part of the daily routine, regular cleansing cures (Panchakarma); warm, light, rather dry foods, fresh fruit, little salt; rather rice or almond milk instead of animal milk
Better to avoid dry foods, salads, beans; leftovers Spicy, sour, hot meals, citrus fruits, paprika, salt, red meat, leftovers leftovers, a lot of cucumber, melon, cheese, milk

Exciting Months: Pregnancy

Pregnancy and motherhood are particularly precious times in a woman's life, which are, however, associated with strong hormonal changes. Those who pay attention to more relaxation and good nutrition during pregnancy do good for both themselves and their baby. Interesting to know:

  • Meals that increase the Pitta Dosha can stimulate blood flow – also to the fetus.
  • Vata-increasing foods can lead to a bloated stomach. In some women, this can lead to slight discomfort or even abdominal pain.
  • Foods with a high Kapha content can slow down the baby's movement.

Avoid leftovers and heavily spiced foods, prefer freshly cooked meals and fresh fruits, i.e., always consume a sufficient amount of fruit. Eat as regularly as possible, not too late, and in rather smaller portions. This way you can prevent bloating and abdominal pressure. A good daily routine, nutritious and healthy diet, rich in fiber and low in carbohydrates, plenty of green leafy vegetables, vitamins and minerals, fresh fruit: This is how you support your health and also balance the doshas. The Ayurvedic dietary supplements Calcio Care and Ayurvedic Iron Rasayana can additionally support.

The Important Time After Pregnancy

"In my opinion, the time after pregnancy is the most important time in a woman's life, because it determines health for the next 20-30-40 years."

Vaidya Dr. Saurabh Sharma

After a pregnancy, the Vata Dosha is greatly increased. Many women now feel extremely tired and physically weakened.

Mother and Child The intra-abdominal pressure decreases after birth and the Vata Dosha increases. Abhyanga is considered in Ayurveda to be the best and simplest method to balance Vata. In India, self-massage with oil is even a fixed ritual for every woman after pregnancy. If possible, daily self-Abhyangas will be particularly beneficial for you now. Regular, gentle (Yoga) asanas and meditation can help give you the necessary strength for your new task. Of crucial importance now again is good nutrition. You should now take special care of yourself and stay in balance – this way you can take good care of your baby.

Menopause

From an Ayurvedic perspective, menopause marks the beginning of the Vata period of life. Every healthy woman will experience this phase. Menopause is a time of strong hormonal changes, which manifest differently from woman to woman. It can proceed smoothly, but often also be very strenuous.

Golden Transition I and II Hot flashes, mood swings, body aches, constipation, headaches, frequent sweating, inflammation in the body, insomnia, anxiety, depression – all these things can significantly disrupt well-being during menopause. Ayurveda knows a number of ways to make this special stage of life, which is also affectionately called the "golden" time in a woman's life in Ayurveda, as pleasant as possible. Again, yoga asanas and meditation, good nutrition, and daily routine help to navigate this phase more easily. Similar to after pregnancy, Abhyanga self-massage is particularly valuable during menopause. Treat your body and soul daily with this wonderful oil massage and enjoy the soothing scents of pure natural Ayurvedic oils on your skin. Highly recommended for menopause are the dietary supplements "Golden Transition I" and "Golden Transition II". Both combine a range of selected herbs that, according to Ayurvedic understanding, contribute to a better dosha balance during menopause, and should always be combined with each other.

Everyone should live for 100 years: Old Age

When exactly does one become a senior woman? Ayurveda says: "Jivatam Shateh": Everyone should live for 100 years. Now, during and after menopause, the Vata phase of life begins, and very natural changes in physiology gradually lead, for example, to a reduced digestive capacity. The quality of the Dhatus and Ojas, the immune strength and vitality also decrease. This is true for all people; it is not a disease, but a natural phase of life that we can certainly enjoy fit, vital, with good health, joy of life, well-being, movement, openness and a lot of fun. Surely you've heard it before: 60 is the new 30.

In Old Age Similar to childhood, it is now particularly important to be mindful and support the body. The best way to do this is to improve our digestion and ensure a good supply of nutrients. Proteins and vitamins, but also minerals, are particularly important. These should be supplied in a good combination, at appropriate times and in a very balanced way. Weaker digestion in this phase of life means that nutrients can no longer be absorbed as well. In Ayurvedic formulations, herbs and minerals are prepared and combined in such a way that they are easily digested and the greatest possible benefit can be derived from them. An example of this is AyurMultimineral, which is also very suitable for 'Best-Agers'.

In this Vata phase of life, too, we should take good care of ourselves and pamper our bodies even more than before. pamper ourselves even more than before. By the way: A particularly valuable companion in all phases of life – from roughly the age of 8 to 80 and beyond – is Maharishi Amrit Kalash. The multitude of herbs it contains are precisely coordinated to support each other as effectively as possible. This is in line with the Ayurvedic principle "Sanskaro hi gunantodhanam", "the combination enhances the quality".   We wish all women to go through all phases of life healthy, relaxed, full of enjoyment and joy.
