Guggul is the valuable gum resin extracted from the sap of the Indian myrrh tree (Commiphora mukul). Traditionally, guggul is extracted from the stem of the balsam or myrrh tree. Its Indian name, "guggulu," means "that which protects against disease." Ayurveda values the resin, with its bitter, pungent, sweet, and astringent taste, as a rasayana capable of balancing all three doshas. Guggul is particularly recommended for Vata or Kapha imbalances.
