Probiotic Lassi – Ayurvedic Fitness Drink for the Gut
In Ayurveda, the gut is considered a crucial pillar of our health. This insight is increasingly supported by scientific studies and is slowly gaining acceptance in conventional medicine.
We can support our gut with probiotic foods that contain an abundance of valuable bacteria and help maintain or rebuild a healthy gut flora.
This article will tell you:
- why the gut is so important for our health,
- what makes Lassi so valuable as an Ayurvedic probiotic,
- how you can easily make Lassi yourself, and
- what to consider when doing so.
The Gut as the Root of Our Body
Ayurveda experts like Dr. Saurabh Sharma often compare the gut to the roots of a tree: "For a strong tree, it is important to provide the roots with fertilizer and nutrients."
The same applies to us: if the gut is healthy and our digestion is intact, we can properly metabolize our food and absorb nutrients from the gut that nourish and strengthen our entire body.
Dr. Sharma adds: "The health of the gut and stomach is like the engine of the body, and if the engine functions well, then the whole system functions well."
As important as good, wholesome food is, if digestion doesn't work properly, even the best foods cannot be fully utilized.
How well food is utilized largely depends on our digestive power (Agni). The stronger our Agni (see notes), the better we can metabolize our food and the fewer waste products accumulate in the metabolism. Good digestion produces Ojas, the last and finest of the seven Dhatus (tissues), which is closely linked to our life energy and makes us shine from within.
"Ayurveda considers our gut to be the root of our body."

Strengthening Digestive Power (Agni)
From an Ayurvedic perspective, we can strengthen our digestive fire (Agni) by:
- eating according to our Dosha type,
- adapting our diet to the season,
- eating at the right time and in peace,
- aligning our meals with the Ayurvedic daily routine and only eating again when the previous meal is completely digested, meaning we are truly hungry,
- providing our body with wholesome, fresh, probiotic, and alkaline foods,
- using digestion-promoting and metabolism-stimulating spices and food supplements,
- avoiding stress and sensory overload, being positive, and ensuring a good work-life balance.

Probiotics – The Living Plus for the Gut
With probiotic foods, we supply our gut with viable microorganisms that support the bacterial balance in the gut. In doing so, we automatically strengthen the gut microbiome, which is so important for our health and digestion, and whose importance and care we already discussed in a previous blog post with Dr. Keith Wallace (USA).
Lassi – Proven Ayurvedic Home Remedy for Gentle Gut Care
Ayurveda knows probiotics in the form of so-called "Asavas" and "Arishtas." However, the simplest and one of the best Ayurvedic probiotics is Lassi, also known as Takra. It is considered gut-cleansing and digestion-promoting. This immensely popular and widespread drink in India contains – if prepared according to Ayurvedic rules – valuable microorganisms that gently support our digestion and strengthen our digestive power. At the same time, it can be easily prepared at home and is suitable for all Dosha types. It is therefore worthwhile to drink Lassi regularly.
Lassi is particularly recommended for people who frequently suffer from bloating or constipation or experience an unpleasant feeling of fullness after eating. People with little appetite and a weak digestive fire should also definitely try Lassi.

Fundamentally Different: Lassi & Yogurt
While Lassi is made from yogurt, it has entirely different, even opposite, properties (Gunas). From an Ayurvedic perspective, yogurt is considered slightly heating (Usna virya), difficult to digest, and "Sroto abhishanti," meaning it blocks our subtle bodily channels (Srotas), which transport, for example, oxygen, bodily fluids, blood, plasma, etc. In some people, this can lead to fatigue and lethargy.
Lassi, on the other hand, has a cooling effect. It opens the subtle channels of the body and strengthens our digestive power. Those who drink Lassi regularly will feel it themselves: we sleep better, feel energized and more enthusiastic.
The secret of this change lies in the manufacturing process. In Ayurveda, it is said: "Sanskaro hi gunantardhanam." This means that the quality of food changes through defined processing methods. And that is exactly what happens when we prepare Lassi from yogurt according to traditional Ayurvedic rules.
| Yogurt | Lassi |
| slightly heating | cooling |
| rather heavy for digestion | supports digestion |
| blocks our subtle bodily channels (Srotas) | opens the subtle bodily channels (Srotas) |
| can lead to fatigue and lethargy | gives us freshness and energy |
Traditional Basic Recipe for Probiotic Lassi
To prepare fresh Ayurvedic Lassi, we use
- 1 part fresh yogurt
- 4 parts lukewarm water
Mix both thoroughly with a mixer or whisk until it is nicely frothy.
Now remove the top layer of foam and filter the rest. A clean cotton cloth is ideal for this, but you can also use a fine sieve. Then add spices such as Vata Churna.
Your probiotic Lassi is ready!
The foam contains fat, so we remove it to make the Lassi lighter and thus easier to digest.
For this reason, we also filter the Lassi. In addition, the consistency is then as described in the authentic recipes.
10 Tips for Your Perfect Lassi
We have compiled 10 tips for you to benefit as much as possible from your Lassi.
-
The Choice of Yogurt
The best basis for your Ayurvedic Lassi is a probiotic organic natural yogurt.
-
The fresher the yogurt, the better
Since yogurt changes its properties over time, it should be as fresh as possible. Those who make their own yogurt with a yogurt maker and probiotic cultures have it particularly easy. It doesn't get any fresher than that! After preparation, the yogurt can be stored for 1-2 days and used for Lassi. -
The ideal ratio
In literature – and also on our website – you will find recipes with different ratios of yogurt to water. According to "Bhavprakash Nighantu," a ratio of 1:4 is optimal, as it thins the Lassi and makes it very easy to digest without affecting Agni.

-
The optimal temperature
Always use lukewarm water to prepare your Lassi! – Please also note that, according to Ayurveda, yogurt should not be used for cooking meals. -
The right time
It is best to drink Lassi regularly – ideally daily – during the day. Not in the evening. -
Prepare fresh
To get the most benefit, you should prepare your Lassi as close to drinking it as possible. If this is not possible for practical reasons, e.g., because you are on the go, it is best to drink the Lassi within 2-3 hours of preparation. -
Vata Churna – authentic addition
With ½ teaspoon of Organic Vata Churna per glass of Lassi, you can make your probiotic drink even more valuable. -
Individual seasoning
Of course, you can also vary the herbs and spices of your Lassi individually. Depending on your Dosha type, Agni, and taste, a small amount of grated ginger, cumin powder, cardamom, a little Himalayan salt, or Ayurvedic rock salt may be used. -
Preferably without: vegan milk alternatives
There are now also tasty vegan Lassi recipes.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, Lassis made with almond, rice, or soy milk have different qualities and do not achieve the benefits of a Lassi made from yogurt. However, they also support digestion and are a healthy alternative. -
Lassi and food supplements
Lassi is also recommended for consuming special food supplements such as Digest Spezial.
Have fun trying it out and all the best for your (gut) health wishes you
